Béchamel

A creamy sauce that is considered the basis of many conforting dishes. Good with vegetables as well as with meat and fish dishes. Easy and quick to prepare.

Cooking time: 15 mins

Prep time: 10 min

Ingredients for 4 people

What do you need?


  • 75 gr of butter

  • 60 gr of plain flour

  • 500 ml of milk

  • salt to taste

  • nutmeg to taste


How to proceed?


  1. In a large saucepan melt the butter over high medium heat.

  2. when boiling, lower the heat, add the flour and cook for about 5 minutes without letting it burn.

  3. Take the saucepan off the heat and whisk in the milk at once till all the flour and butter mix is amalgamted.

  4. Return the saucepan over medium heat and slowly bring to a boil mixing all the time.

  5. Add salt to taste as well as a sprinkle of freshly grated nutmeg.

Notes:

  • Béchamel can be prepared ahead. if you do so make sure to cover the surface directly with clingfilm to avoid a skin forming.
